Los Hijas de la Tostada, Playa del Carmen

Sometimes focusing on just one thing and doing it to perfection is the way to go. If you’re looking for consistently delicious and unique seafood tostadas in a prime, people watching location in Playa del Carmen, then Los Hijas on 5th Ave is a clear winner.

Location: Corner of 5th Ave and Calle 38, Playa del Carmen, Mexico. They also have a second, quieter location at 25th Ave and Calle 28.

Menu: Los Hijas is open for lunch and dinner and serves up fresh and tasty seafood tostadas with a modern, fusion twist. Don’t be fooled by the fact that they mainly just serve tostadas (they do a have a few other dishes such as a tuna burger and fish and chips), the menu is large and creative and will leave you wanting to return time and again in an attempt to try it all.

Thoughts: I have eaten at Los Hijas a dozen times and enjoyed every single bite. The menu is split into sections with headings like “Raw Bar”, “Hot Bar” and “Fresh Bar” which helps to narrow down your choices. The food is always fresh and consistent and the value is surprisingly high for such a touristy and popular location. There are outside tables which are fun for people watching and also a partial inside area including seats at the bar to watch the creative action. There is no AC as the front is all open, but they do have big fans to keep you cool. During peak season you may have to wait for a table but it is well worth it.

Here are a few of my favorite toppings which are piled on top of an incredibly light, fluffy and crispy tostada:

  • Cameron Roca: Breaded and fried shrimp topped with red cabbage, black sesame seeds, and a chipotle mayo sauce.
  • Tostada Cancun: Ahi tuna, shrimp, caramelized onions and avocado
  • Molcajet: Mix of raw and cooked tuna, shrimp, scallops, and octopus
  • Sellado: Seared tuna with avocado, ajonjoli, and scallions

Price Range: The tostadas range in price from 35-65 pesos (about $1.80-3.50) and the larger menu items like fish and chips range from 85-160 pesos (about $4.50-8.60).

For Pinterest: You know you’ll want to come back to this later.
